Compassion
Our Purpose. It is the intent of Compassion Ministries to serve people in the community God has called us to. We stand with Christ as advocates for those who are hurting, broken, lost, forgotten, or oppressed as confirmed in the words of the prophet Micah:
Open Arms Care Center. Wonderful Mercy partners with this Christian-based food and clothing bank in Gilbert to serve people who are going through financial difficulties. Rhona Lutton directs this ministry, which staffs the center with volunteers every Saturday morning. Once a month our church congregation has the opportunity to donate non-perishable food items as well as gently used clothing during Open Arms Sunday.
Street Ministry. Under the direction of Sue Serafinowicz, this ministry reaches out to the homeless and hungry through the simplicity of the gospel. Every Saturday, a team of volunteers from our congregation goes out to St. Vincent de Paul in Mesa to distribute water, breakfast bars, and clothing to the people who have gathered there for breakfast. The focus of this ministry centers on the love and friendship our volunteers offer to people who often feel invisible. Our presence there matters to our dear friends because we leave the judging up to God and are committed to being there every Saturday.
Just One. "Just one dollar to change a life." Every Sunday as worship begins, we invite each person in our congregation to come forward and place one dollar, no more no less, in a burlap bag that hangs on a cross in the front of the stage. We use this money to help people from Street Ministry transition to a new life.
Christmas Angel Tree Project. A cherished tradition at Wonderful Mercy is the adoption of several families from the Gilbert School District who are not able to provide their children with Christmas presents. We shower these families not only with wonderful gifts, but also with a reminder that they matter to God.
Patterson Elementary School. We value our involvement in our community! What better way to show this than with our next-door neighbors? Every year we take fruit trays and baked goods to the staff at Patterson Elementary School. We do this at the beginning of the school year to show our appreciation for all they do for the children in our community.
